Pest Wolf is a German one man band, composed by the one and only member Isegrimh, whose debut demo … of Wolves and the Shining Moon was released in September, 2009. However, the low score with which this release has been rated definitely says it all about its quality, as what we have here could not properly be considered as black metal; this is rather more like an attempt at giving shape to something that may vaguely recall similar sonorities, and, despite how much effort might have been put in this, the whole thing is accomplished with such a scarcity of ideas, means and ability that it simply verges on ridiculous. A pretty much faceless intro, in which typical howls of wolves work as a background to an awkward distorted arpeggio, soon leaves place to the first actual song of the bunch, entitled …of Wolves and the shining Moon (narration I), which makes clear every single flaw of the project under discussion. I’m not going to criticize the amateurish quality of the mixing/production, for it’s a demo we’re talking about after all, but the lack of bass lines, the absence of something that may even remotely get close to an actual guitar work (guitar-wise, none of what can be heard here makes sense, it just sounds like random discordant sounds by a person that probably has no clue about how a guitar is supposed to be played), are all things that personally keep me from taking a release seriously. No need to say more on the dull and meaningless songwriting, nor to carry on with the description of the successive tracks. |
