Melodic Death Metal

8/10

Nightrage, a band of mixed nationality (their line up includes members from Greece and Sweden), have been a warranty for a long time now to lovers of classic Gothenburg sound: modern, yet indissolubly bounded to that lighter and more melodic branch of death metal that drawn the crowds during the Nineties (after all, the fact that Tomas ‘Tompa’ Lindberg has handled vocal duties in the band, as well as a dude named Mikael Stanne, who appeared as a guest on their second output Descent into Chaos, is pretty self – explanatory) , their songs never fail to offer a pleasant and entertaining listening, unless you don’t necessarily seek originality and innovation at all costs. In fact, upon hitting play, Nightrage’s influences become quickly audible: early Soilwork (Shed the Blood, Failure of All Human Emotions), Arch Enemy, At the Gates (of course), and, last but not least, In Flames, from whom Nightrage also borrow the typical, folkish acoustic breaks (A Grim Struggle, Abandon, Mocking Modesty). Basically, Wearing a Martyr’s Crownis a sort of ABC of Swedish death metal: if you already know Nightrage, you pretty much know what to expect. If you’re unfamiliar with them, and you’re looking for a band that can play this genre the way it’s meant to be, yet succeeding in sounding adventurous and involving, then you need to look no further.Recommended!
